Miami Dolphins insider offers latest scoop on Terron Armstead’s future

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Terron Armstead reportedly is expected to return to play in the 2024 season after being noncommittal about continuing his career or retiring.

Though insider Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald did not reveal who reassured him about Armstead’s status, the report looks to be good news for the Dolphins.

Even though he was limited to just 10 regular season games last season, Armstead was selected to the Pro Bowl for a second straight season and the fifth time in his career.

But he will turn 33 before the 2024 NFL campaign begins and this past season dealt with injuries to his knee, ankle, back and quad. In his two seasons with Miami, he has been able to play in just 23 of the possible 34 regular season games.

Earlier this month, Armstead said he had not started the process of thinking about playing another season. An earlier report said that the Dolphins were already looking toward the 2024 NFL Draft as a possible avenue to acquire his successor.

Armstead is set to make more than $13 million this coming season as part of the five-year contract he signed with the Dolphins after leaving the New Orleans Saints as a free agent.

The veteran’s status is just one of many the Dolphins are dealing with early in the NFL offseason. They reportedly may be more than $50 million over the projected NFL salary cap and have decisions to make on possible new contracts for defensive lineman Christian Wilkins (who is eligible for the franchise tag), wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and safety DeShon Elliott. Miami also may choose to move on from defensive back Xavien Howard.

In addition, center Connor Williams, who started nine games before landing on injured reserve, is set to become a free agent.

The team already has undergone some significant changes to the coaching staff, headlined by new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. So, facing what is certain to be a busy offseason dealing with the roster, Armstead’s return could be even more important to ensure at least some form of continuity.
