Report: New York Giants eyeing Miami Dolphins coach for defensive coordinator position

The New York Giants are allegedly eyeing Miami Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile for their defensive coordinator job.

Campanile has been working for the Dolphins organization since the 2020 season. Before joining the Dolphins, he served as a coach with several college programs, including Boston College and the University of Michigan.

The Dolphins have finished with at least nine wins in each of Campanile’s four seasons with the team.

But Miami’s defense during the 2023 regular season wasn’t all that elite. The Dolphins allowed 23.0 points per game, which was the 11th-most of any team in the NFL. For comparison, the Giants allowed 23.9 points per game.

The Giants were one of the worst teams in the NFC East division during the regular season. They ended up with a 6-11 record, which was the second-worst record in the division, ahead of only the Washington Commanders, who finished with a 4-13 record.

However, the Giants did earn an impressive home win over the Philadelphia Eagles in their final regular-season game on Jan. 7, though it’s worth mentioning that star quarterback Jalen Hurts only played part of the game due to a finger injury he suffered.

Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for 297 yards and one touchdown compared to one interception in the team’s 17-point victory. He outplayed Eagles signal-caller Marcus Mariota, who threw for just 148 yards on 13 completions versus New York.

New York was at least competitive at home during the regular season, as evidenced by its 4-4 home record. But on the road, it was a different story. The Giants won just two of their nine road games on the season, with both of their road wins coming against subpar opponents in the Arizona Cardinals and Commanders.

Only time will tell if the Dolphins will lose their linebackers coach to the Giants. But considering all the team success that the Dolphins have enjoyed over the past four seasons with Campanile, it’s understandable as to why the Giants put in a request to interview the 41-year-old.
