NFL coach on motions in Miami Dolphins offense: ‘They look Canadian to us’

The Miami Dolphins have had one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL this season. They are averaging a league-best 31.7 points per game through nine games.

NFL coaches praised Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel for his work with the team’s offense.

One defensive coach alluded to the Dolphins’ gaudy offensive numbers this season.

“The offensive numbers and production speak for themselves,” a defensive coach from another team told The Athletic. “He is calling the offense, he is designing the offense, he’s creating the motions we haven’t seen in the NFL before. They look Canadian to us.”

A different defensive coach said McDaniel’s coaching has done wonders for Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

“Mike does an outstanding job in terms of schematics and looks and optics of things,” the other defensive coach said. “It allows Tua to play fast, and Tyreek has space to run his routes. People can’t just roll to him all the time. He doesn’t just have to be a vertical guy or catch shallows and catch-and-runs. He can do it all. The offense showcases all that for him.”

For as excellent as Miami’s offense has been this season, it wasn’t so great in the Dolphins’ loss against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The Dolphins scored just 14 points in the game, all in the third quarter.

It was also a forgettable game for both Tagovailoa and Hill, seeing as how the former threw for just 193 yards and one touchdown, while the latter totaled 62 yards on eight receptions.

The loss dropped the Dolphins to 6-3 on the season.

Tagovailoa may have put together a lackluster performance against the Chiefs, but he has arguably had the best season of any quarterback in the league so far. He is leading the NFL in passing yards (2,609), passing touchdowns (19) and quarterback rating (106.4) in nine games played with the Dolphins this season.

Hill has starred for the Dolphins this season too. He is leading the league in receiving yards (1,076) as well as receiving touchdowns (eight) in his second season with the Dolphins franchise and eighth season in the NFL.

Hill started his NFL career playing for the Chiefs.

Miami won’t play its next game for nearly two weeks, as the Dolphins will take on the Las Vegas Raiders at home on Nov. 19. The Raiders own a subpar 4-5 record and have really struggled to win games on the road this season, as they own a 1-4 road record.

While fans would like to see the Dolphins offense be more successful against the best teams in the NFL, McDaniel has done a fantastic job overall in turning Miami into an offensive juggernaut.
