NFL coach details where Tua Tagovailoa struggles in wake of interceptions vs. New York Giants

The Miami Dolphins have had the best passing offense in the NFL so far this season. The team has accumulated a whopping 1,681 total passing yards through five games in the 2023 regular season, almost 200 more yards than any other team in the NFL.

A big reason why the Dolphins’ offense has been so dynamic is quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He has accounted for 1,614 of Miami’s 1,681 passing yards on the season and has also thrown for 11 touchdowns.

But an NFL coach recently pointed out something Tagovailoa isn’t the best at after he threw two interceptions in Miami’s win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

“The book on Tua said if you can cloud things, he’s not the best at adapting on his feet when it’s not there,” a coach told The Athletic.

Tagovailoa was chosen with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft after a three-season stint playing college football at the University of Alabama. He threw for 2,800-plus yards and 33-plus touchdowns in each of his final two seasons as a member of the Crimson Tide.

The quarterback’s best season of college football came during his sophomore season, the 2018 season. Tagovailoa threw for 3,966 yards and 43 touchdowns in 15 games played with the Crimson Tide as a sophomore.

The 25-year-old has played four seasons in the NFL, all as a member of the Dolphins franchise. He totaled 3,548 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns in 13 appearances with Miami during the 2022 regular season (all starts). Also, Tagovailoa led the league in yards gained per pass attempt (8.9), yards gained per pass completion (13.7) and quarterback rating (105.5) a season ago.

For as well as Tagovailoa performed during the 2022 regular season, he’s on pace to have an even better 2023 regular season. He has thrown for 1,614 yards and 11 touchdowns in five games during the 2023 regular season.

Despite the coach’s words, there’s no denying that Tagovailoa has been one of the best players at his position in the NFL thus far during the 2023 regular season. Here’s to hoping that he will be able to lead the Dolphins to a victory over quarterback Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 15 to improve the team’s record to 5-1.
