Miami Dolphins elevate practice squad member for Week 5 matchup vs. New York Giants

After losing to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills by a final score of 48-20 on Oct. 1, the Miami Dolphins are hoping to get back in the win column and pick up their fourth win of the season against Daniel Jones and the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Dolphins have elevated defensive end and practice squad member Chase Winovich to the team’s active roster for Sunday’s game.

Winovich was selected by the New England Patriots with the No. 77 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft after spending four seasons playing college football at the University of Michigan. He racked up 15-plus solo tackles, 17-plus assisted tackles and 5.0-plus sacks in each of his final three seasons as a member of the Wolverines.

Arguably the 6-foot-3 defensive end’s best season with the Wolverines came during the 2017 season. Winovich totaled 36 solo tackles, 73 total tackles, 19.0 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in 13 games played with the team.

The 28-year-old has played for three teams — the Patriots, Cleveland Browns and Dolphins — across his five seasons in the NFL. He ended up with 14 solo tackles, six assists on tackles, three quarterback hits and 1.0 sack in eight appearances with the Browns during the 2022 regular season (two starts).

Winovich’s contributions didn’t translate into much collective success for the 2022 iteration of the Browns, however. The team finished the regular season with a subpar 7-10 record, the worst record of any team in the AFC North a season ago.

The defensive end’s best season of his NFL career to this point came during the 2020 season when he was a member of the Patriots. Winovich totaled 48 combined tackles, 33 solo tackles, 15 assists on tackles, six tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hits and one interception in 16 games with New England during the regular season (nine starts).

Winovich hasn’t enjoyed a very productive 2023 regular season with the Dolphins thus far. He’s logged one solo tackle in two games played with Miami (zero starts). But here’s to hoping that the defensive end can put together a standout performance on Sunday against the Giants and help lead the Dolphins to a home victory.
