Report: Dalvin Cook open to fresh start away from Vikings amid recent links to Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have been linked to Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook several times throughout the 2023 offseason.

Although Dolphins insider Barry Jackson reported last month that the idea of a Dolphins trade for Cook was considered and “didn’t work out,” he left the door open by saying that a potential move for Cook “can never be ruled out.”

Now, there’s new information available on the veteran, who is seemingly open to a fresh start outside of Minnesota.

“He’s a name to watch,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said of Cook’s future around the league. “His future in Minnesota appears up in the air right now. The Vikings, for now, have been willing to hold on to his $14 million cap hit, but once June 1 hits, they can save $9 million on the cap if they do release him. Now, I know Cook is training in South Florida right now, he’s been cleared off that torn labrum surgery to start to do some running and explosive work. He loves Minnesota but if they do move on, he’s open to a fresh start. Miami could be one to watch. He’s from Miami, they were linked to Dalvin Cook once upon a time in the offseason.”

The Dolphins don’t necessarily need to add any more help to their running back room, but Cook is one of the most productive running backs in the league when he’s at his best, making him a hard player to ignore as a potential addition.

The 27-year-old has registered at least 1,000 rushing yards in four consecutive seasons, earning Pro Bowl honors in each of those years.

Over his last four years combined, he has totaled 5,024 rushing yards and 43 rushing touchdowns. He has also made an impact in the passing game, totaling 170 receptions for 1,399 yards and three scores during that four-season span.

Miami’s running back room currently features players like Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., De’Von Achane and Myles Gaskin.

The Dolphins are looking to improve their rushing attack in the 2023 season after they struggled in that department in the 2022 campaign. The team averaged just 99.2 yards per game on the ground last season.

While adding a player like Cook would undoubtedly help Miami in that area, the team’s offensive line is going to need to carry its weight regardless of who’s carrying the football. That will be a major key to look for this coming season.
