Report: Miami Dolphins signing XFL player who previously spent time with New Orleans Saints

The 2023 XFL season is in the books, and it seems as though at least one player from the league did enough to impress the Miami Dolphins this spring.

According to a report, the Dolphins are signing Bryce Thompson, a defensive back who played for the Seattle Sea Dragons this year in the XFL.

Miami recently invited some XFL players to camp, including Thompson. Now, the 23-year-old is the newest member of the Dolphins organization.

Including the postseason, Thompson appeared in 11 games in the 2023 XFL season. He finished with 34 total tackles, two interceptions and four tackles for loss.

He has experience at the NFL level, as he spent time with the New Orleans Saints before joining the XFL. Notably, his NFL debut actually came against the Dolphins in Week 16 of the 2021 season.

The youngster didn’t get many opportunities to showcase his abilities during his time with New Orleans, but he did have a strong collegiate career at the University of Tennessee.

Across three seasons (31 games) with the Volunteers, he racked up eight interceptions, eight passes defended, 100 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and two sacks. He left his mark during his time with the program, helping the Vols win the Gator Bowl in the 2019 season.

Now, he’s getting a shot to make some noise in the NFL, and Dolphins fans would certainly love nothing more than for him to catch on with the team. The football world has seen some nice stories recently with players making leaps from secondary leagues (like the XFL and USFL) to the NFL, and Thompson could end up becoming the latest player to have success in doing so.

Miami’s 2023 regular season is still a few months away, but the summer months are just about here, which means fall is right around the corner. The Dolphins will open the 2023 season on Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers on the road.

Time will tell if Thompson is still on the roster by then. If so, he may get a chance to see some NFL snaps with his second team.
