Report: Miami Dolphins continue to sign intriguing undrafted rookie free agents

With only four selections in the recently concluded 2023 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins were expected by many to be major players in the undrafted rookie market.

That’s actually what has happened, with reports of the organization signing prospects already making the rounds.

Jarrett Horst is a 6-foot-6 offensive tackle from Michigan State University. While he’s seen by some as an extremely talented offensive lineman, he failed to impress teams enough to be selected in the draft. However, he now has the opportunity to prove his mettle as he tries to make it to Miami’s 53-man roster for the 2023 season.

As for Anthony Montalvo and Mitchell Agude, they will certainly give it their all to impress the Dolphins’ top brass.

Montalvo had a solid final year at the University of Central Florida, finishing the 2022 season with 43 total tackles and two sacks. Agude completed his collegiate career suiting up for the University of Miami after spending two years at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Those are just three of the undrafted free agents the Dolphins have taken fliers on. Other rookies that they have reportedly added include Garrett Nelson, who apparently chose Miami over 11 other offers, Michael Turk (nephew of longtime NFL punter Matt Turk) and quarterback James Blackman.

Only time will tell if any of the signings leapfrog the Dolphins’ actual draft selections in earning slots on the regular season roster or practice squad.

Miami’s first pick in the 2023 draft was Cam Smith, a cornerback from the University of South Carolina. It wasn’t that surprising that the team selected a defensive player, considering that it is looking to bolster that department with new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in town.

The organization’s next three picks were running back Devon Achane, Elijah Higgins and tackle Ryan Hayes, all of whom have the potential to help provide versatility to the Dolphins’ offense.

These are certainly exciting times for Miami, who will surely want to secure a second straight playoff berth, a feat it has not achieved since making five consecutive trips to the playoffs from the 1997 season to the 2001 campaign.
