Report: Miami Dolphins are open to trading Cedrick Wilson Jr.

The Miami Dolphins have already made a number of impactful moves to their roster this offseason, but that does not mean they are necessarily done. According to a recent report, the Dolphins are open to the idea of trading wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr.

According to the report, the Dolphins could trade Wilson in an attempt to save some cap space. However, the report also did indicate that the team is open to the idea of holding onto him.

“The Dolphins could trade Wilson this offseason to reduce his cap hit from $8 million to $2 million or $1 million, depending on the timing of the trade,” Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald wrote. “They’re open to that, but they’re also OK with having him on the team, according to an involved source.”

Jackson added that while a trade is possible for Wilson, fans should not expect the team to simply release him if a deal is not made.

“But cutting him wouldn’t make sense; $5 million of his $7 million salary is guaranteed, and his cap hit would drop only from $8 million to $6 million if he’s cut after June 1, and to $7 million if cut before,” he added.

Depending on when a potential trade involving Wilson would take place, the move could also impact the team’s strategy for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. At the moment, they only have four upcoming selections. It is possible that a trade involving Wilson could net them another — albeit fairly late — draft pick.

Wilson is a solid player, but he may be more disposable in the eyes of the Dolphins’ decision-makers due to the acquisition of wide receiver Braxton Berrios earlier this offseason.

From a production standpoint, Wilson had a pretty quiet 2022 season. He recorded just 12 catches on 18 targets for 136 yards and no scores. However, just because he didn’t enjoy much success in his first season with Miami does not mean that he is not capable of more.

The 2021 season saw him achieve career marks in basically all key statistical areas. With the Dallas Cowboys, he finished with 45 catches on 61 targets for 602 yards and six scores that season. He managed that solid level of production despite starting in just four of the 16 games he appeared in.

So, as the offseason continues on, it looks as though Wilson’s name is one for Dolphins fans to keep an eye on. It’ll be interesting to see whether he is still in South Florida by the time offseason activities begin for players around the league.
