Report: Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots met with star running back Kendre Miller

The Miami Dolphins have re-signed four running backs already this offseason, but it seems like they might be interested in adding to that group in the near future.

Texas Christian University running back Kendre Miller apparently met with the Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots on Wednesday as he recovers from an MCL injury he suffered last season.

In his first season as the lead tailback for the Horned Frogs, Miller carried the ball 224 times for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns. During his first two collegiate campaigns, the 20-year-old ran the ball 137 times for 1,011 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Dolphins currently only have four picks in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft, with none of them coming in the first round. Miami has one second-round pick (No. 51 overall), one third-round pick (No. 84 overall), one sixth-round pick (No. 197 overall) and one seventh-round pick (No. 238 overall).

Miller should be available for selection when the Dolphins get on the clock for the first time. If he were to be selected by the Dolphins, the 6-foot, 220-pounder would be an interesting fit.

“The size and production will check important boxes, but Miller’s lack of tempo and explosiveness between the tackles could turn him into a grinder against the speed of NFL defenses,” wrote NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein. “His restricted stride length provides greater control to cut early in the run, but it works against him when he needs to hit the gas and stride past linebackers. He has the size and strength to keep runs moving though contact, although he could be an even better run finisher. His third-down value is relatively low, so he will need to sell himself as an early down backup on the next level.”

Miami currently has Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and Myles Gaskin on the roster. All four were with the Dolphins last season and have experience with head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense.

Perhaps the Dolphins met with Miller to see if he’d be a good candidate for the team’s practice squad this season. There’s plenty of time to figure things out.

Though he’s built pretty well for a running back, Miller does lack some top-end speed. Therefore, he might be better off running in between the tackles in the pros. He is, however, capable of making quick cuts to break free and make defenders miss.

It will be interesting to see what type of role he plays if the Dolphins end up acquiring him. The 2023 draft will start on April 27 and run through April 29.
