Report: Miami Dolphins restructure Bradley Chubb’s deal, create nearly $15M in cap space

The Miami Dolphins are looking to create some cap space, and they recently did so by restructuring pass rusher Bradley Chubb’s deal.

All of the cap space the Dolphins created with the move will undoubtedly come in handy this offseason as the squad looks to upgrade its roster.

Chubb was acquired by Miami from the Denver Broncos in a midseason trade several months ago, and it took him some time to find his footing in South Florida.

In eight games with the Dolphins, the two-time Pro Bowler registered 13 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Plenty of fans were disappointed with his efforts, especially because Miami parted ways with a first-round pick and fourth-round pick to acquire him. The Dolphins also sent running back Chase Edmonds to Denver in the deal.

Miami has made some moves to change up its defensive coaching staff this offseason, with the most notable one being the hiring of Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator.

Many will recall that Fangio was Chubb’s head coach on the Broncos when the star defender was named a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career. That honor came during the 2020 campaign, when he recorded 42 combines tackles, 7.5 sacks and one forced fumble.

Dolphins fans are hoping that the former No. 5 overall pick can regain some of that form in the upcoming season.

Restructuring Chubb’s deal puts the Dolphins just about $1 million over the salary cap, with more restructures and cuts coming soon.

Just a couple of days ago, it was reported that the Dolphins have informed cornerback Byron Jones that he will be released on March 15. The team plans to designate him as a post-June 1 cut, a move that will save it $13.6 million against the salary cap. Those savings won’t be available until after June 1.

After a 2022 season filled with plenty of ups and downs, the Dolphins are hoping to have a solid offseason in which they can plug some holes on their roster.

There’s a solid core already on the squad, but some pieces are still needed in order to form a Super Bowl contender.
