Keidron Smith explains what it would mean to his family to get drafted by hometown Miami Dolphins

With the Miami Dolphins out of the NFL playoffs, most of their attention is likely now focused on the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

Plenty of prospects would love to get a chance to play for the Dolphins, and it sounds like University of Kentucky defensive back Keidron Smith is among those players.

Ahead of this week’s Senior Bowl, Smith spoke about the type of player he is.

“As far as strengths, I would say my football IQ, my versatility, my height and length,” he said. “As far as things to work on, as a longer and taller corner, sometimes it’s harder for me to get out of my transitions and my breaks. And just being consistent overall.”

He later went on to explain what it would be like if the Dolphins were to draft him.

“My whole family would think that’s fantastic,” Smith said. “It would be great for me just to be home, playing in front of my family again and just playing the state of Florida.”

Smith is from West Palm Beach, Fla., so his family wouldn’t have to travel far in order to watch him play for the Dolphins, who currently only have five picks in the 2023 draft. They have one pick in the second round, two picks in the third round, one pick in the sixth round and one pick in the seventh round.

A look at Smith’s highlights from the 2022 season with the Wildcats shows that he has solid coverage skills and instincts. At 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, he can line up with just about anyone on the field.

During the 2022 campaign, Smith recorded 46 total tackles, two interceptions, five passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Smith currently isn’t expected to be selected in the first round of the draft, so it seems like the Dolphins have a good shot at landing him.

The Dolphins are expected to meet with Smith at the Senior Bowl, so the defensive back will surely be hoping that he can impress his hometown team.

Miami might be in need of another cornerback, with veteran Byron Jones’ future with the franchise a little bit murky. He underwent offseason surgery in 2022, and while he was expected to come back and play at some point during the 2022 campaign, he wound up not appearing in a single contest.

Only time will tell if Smith ends up landing with the Dolphins. The 2023 draft is set to get started on April 27.
