Report: Dolphins quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell ‘gaining momentum’ as coaching carousel nears

As the 2022 NFL regular season starts winding down, teams at the bottom of the barrel are likely already starting the search for potential additions to their coaching staffs.

According to a recent report, Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell could get some serious consideration thanks to the impressive job he’s done with Tua Tagovailoa.

Though Bevell is currently serving as a position coach, he’s got a fair amount of experience when it comes to having bigger responsibilities on a team’s staff.

He previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2010. He then served in the same role with the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2017, winning a Super Bowl with the franchise.

He’s also served as an interim head coach on two different occasions — first for the Detroit Lions in 2020 and then for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.

The 52-year-old has a lot of experience under his belt, and his masterful work with Tagovailoa so far this season could seemingly lead to his first shot as a full-time head coach.

Obviously, he can’t be given all of the credit when it comes to Tagovailoa’s ascension this season, but it is hard to deny that his coaching has seemingly played a major role. Tagovailoa simply seems more confident and poised in the pocket this season, and it has led to incredible success.

Tagovailoa has passed for 2,265 yards and 18 touchdowns while completing 71.0 percent of his passes. He’s also thrown just three picks.

He’s already eclipsed his previous career-high for touchdown passes in a season (16), and he has seven more games to add to his current total.

While it would certainly be a loss for Tagovailoa and the Dolphins if Bevell were to head elsewhere in the offseason, that is simply the way things go in the NFL.

Although it is tough to lose position coaches and coordinators to other franchises, it is typically a sign of team success.

When it comes to team success, the Dolphins have an incredible chance to not only end their playoff drought, but also make some serious noise once the playoffs get underway. They are currently the No. 2 seed in the AFC and very much control their own destiny.

It will be interesting to see if Bevell ends up taking on a new challenge once the season comes to an end.
