Report: Miami Dolphins bring back Jamal Perry amid injuries to multiple defensive backs

Though the Miami Dolphins are 4-3 on the season after halting their three-game skid against the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday night, there are some fairly serious issues that the team is dealing with at the moment.

The team’s defensive backfield has been decimated by injuries, and cornerback depth is now becoming a major concern. To try to somewhat diminish the issue, the Dolphins have signed Jamal Perry to the team’s practice squad.

Perry spent the the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Dolphins.

In his NFL career, Perry has recorded 31 games played and 7 starts. His best season came in his rookie year when he played in 14 games, finishing with one interception and six passes defended.

Dealing With Injuries

The injuries to Dolphins defensive backs started mounting even before the regular season began.

Star corner Byron Jones hasn’t played a game after undergoing surgery in the offseason. Talented youngster Trill Williams was placed on the injured reserve back in August, and Nik Needham recently joined him on IR.

Most recently, head coach Mike McDaniel said that starting safety Brandon Jones would be placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury versus the Steelers.

Standout rookie Kader Kohou has missed the past two games with an oblique injury while Keion Crossen missed Sunday’s game against the Steelers with a knee injury.

Affecting the Pass Defense

The injuries have certainly taken a toll on the team. The Dolphins currently rank as the fourth-worst defense in the league when it comes to completion percentage of opposing quarterbacks (68.7 percent). They also allow 7.6 yards gained per pass attempt, the sixth-highest total in the league.

Though Perry is not going to fix either of those issues on his own, it is, at the very least, necessary for the coaching staff to know that it has the bodies necessary to carry out the game plan in the coming weeks.

When it comes to the battles ahead, there is some good news. The Dolphins are on the verge of starting a rather favorable string of games in the coming weeks.

They’ll face the Detroit Lions next before continuing an NFC North road trip against the Chicago Bears. They will then return home to take on the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans.

If the Dolphins play to their ability, they should be favored to win in all four of those games. Only time will tell if they accomplish that feat.
