Report: Miami Dolphins restructure Byron Jones’ contract, create over $10M in cap space

The Miami Dolphins reportedly have restructured the contract of veteran cornerback Byron Jones.

The move reportedly creates over $10 million in cap space for the Dolphins, giving the team some needed flexibility after its recent string of big moves.

It seems like Jones will remain in the secondary alongside Xavien Howard during the 2022 season. The former Dallas Cowboys defensive back was a big signing for the Dolphins prior to the start of the 2020 regular season, and the team is surely hoping he can help the defense in 2022.

Last season, Jones appeared in 16 games for the Dolphins and recorded 10 passes defended and one forced fumble. While Jones did not register an interception in the 2021 season, he did pick up 58 combined tackles.

The Dolphins needed to create some cap space after the recent additions of Terron Armstead and Tyreek Hill.

A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of the University of Connecticut, Jones has put together a solid NFL career. He’s made one Pro Bowl in seven seasons and has four interceptions throughout his career.

The Dolphins have a solid secondary that includes Jones, Howard and standout youngster Jevon Holland, and they are looking to keep that group intact heading into the 2022 regular season.

Miami narrowly missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, but it has made several important additions this offseason. Miami’s front office has given Mike McDaniel a solid group to work with.

The future seems very bright for the entire Dolphins organization after making some major moves and reshaping its roster.
