Report: Miami Dolphins could pursue running back Raheem Mostert

The Miami Dolphins reportedly could target San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert in free agency this coming offseason.

Mostert, who played for new Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel in San Francisco, was limited to just one game last season due to injury.

“Don’t be surprised if the Dolphins pursue 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, an impending unrestricted free agent,” the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson wrote. “According to a 49ers person, McDaniel thinks very highly of Mostert.”

Mostert played some of the best years of his career in San Francisco, as the 29-year-old ran for 772 yards and eight rushing touchdowns during the 2019 season.

However, injuries have plagued Mostert since then, as he’s appeared in just nine games over the past two seasons. Mostert carried the ball 104 times in eight games during the 2020 season, totaling 521 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

For his career, the veteran running back averages an impressive 5.7 yards per carry and has scored 14 touchdowns (11 rushing, three receiving).

The Dolphins will have some interesting decisions to make at running back this offseason, as Myles Gaskin, Phillip Lindsay, Duke Johnson and others handled touches for them in the 2021 campaign.

McDaniel may be more comfortable with a running back he has coached before, and that could lead to the Dolphins letting one of last year’s backs leave in free agency.

Miami is hoping that McDaniel will be able to turn things around after the Dolphins narrowly missed the playoffs the past two seasons. It will be interesting to see how much McDaniel’s past plays a role in how the Dolphins shape the roster for the 2022 season.
