Report: Miami Dolphins coach emerges as possible candidate for Akron’s head coaching vacancy

Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Charlie Frye reportedly could be a candidate for the head coaching vacancy at the University of Akron.

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman broke down several candidates for the job and pointed to Frye’s experience already coaching in the NCAA’s Mid-American Conference as a reason why he could be considered.

Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Charlie Frye, another former Akron quarterback, also could be an option if he wants to come back to college,” Feldman wrote. “We think he’d have a hard time saying no to his alma mater. The 40-year-old Ohio native, a former third-round pick who started for the Cleveland Browns, has worked as a high school coach in Florida; at the Elite 11 QB program; in player personnel for Florida; and as an offensive coordinator in the MAC at Central Michigan. He’s certainly got the resume if he wants to leave the NFL.”

Frye, who played at Akron from the 2001 season through the 2004 season, may have a dream of coaching at his alma mater.

During his time at Akron, Frye threw for 11,049 yards, 64 touchdowns and 32 interceptions through 46 career games.

While it is certainly possible that he wants to remain in the NFL ranks, Frye will have a major decision to make if he is offered the job.

The Dolphins are just 1-7 this season with Frye as the team’s quarterbacks coach. Second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has not developed the way that many had hoped, but Frye could still turn him around in the second half of the season.
