According to a report, the Miami Dolphins are one of two teams considered finalists for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The quarterback is reportedly expected to be traded in the coming days.
“Multiple executives from teams not directly involved in the discussions tell PFT that there’s mounting chatter that Watson will be traded in the coming days,” wrote Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.
“The two finalists are believed to be the [Carolina] Panthers and the Dolphins. (The [Denver] Broncos and [Philadelphia] Eagles also had been linked to Watson.) If it happens, it would turn things upside down for whichever team gets Watson.”
Watson has been wrapped up in some disturbing sexual assault and misconduct allegations this offseason. The situation is not yet resolved. For that reason, his future in the league remains in question.
Trading for Watson would certainly raise a lot of question marks about Tua Tagovailoa’s future with the Dolphins. A few months ago, it was reported that the organization was committed to Tagovailoa as the starter unless Watson became available via trade.
It’s quite possible that Tagovailoa would be a key piece in Miami’s trade package for Watson.
On the field, Watson has had a successful NFL career so far. In the 2020 season, he completed 70.2 percent of his passes for a league-best 4,823 yards. He also had 33 touchdown passes.
There are a lot of unknowns in this situation. The Dolphins would surely cause a stir if they were to trade for Watson. It sounds like the matter could develop further within the next few days.
