Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores made the team’s stance on the idea of trading star cornerback Xavien Howard very clear on Friday.
“We don’t want to trade X,” said Flores. “Write that down. He’s a big part of the team. We don’t want to trade him.”
The Dolphins’ situation with Howard is an uncomfortable one.
The star player requested a trade over his frustrations regarding contract discussions, but the team is reluctant to meet the trade demand. Instead, Miami is looking to get things worked out with the 28-year-old.
Flores continued to give positive updates regarding contract talks with Howard.
“These things take time,” said Flores. “As long as lines of communication are open and everyone is willing to compromise we can get something done.”
Howard is a two-time Pro Bowler, and he is one of the best corners in football. In the 2020 season, he led the league in interceptions (10) and passes defended (20).
When healthy, he has a very impressive track record, and it seems like he has plenty of juice left in the tank. He has outperformed his current contract, and that is the biggest reason he is seeking a new deal.
There is no doubt that the Dolphins would be in a worse position without Howard. He is a staple to the team’s defense, and if Miami wants to crack the postseason in the 2021 campaign, Howard is going to need to be a key element.
