Report: Miami Dolphins sign tight end as COVID-19 decimates team’s depth at position

In the wake of several roster moves involving three tight ends, the Miami Dolphins announced on Tuesday that they had signed tight end Gabe Holmes.

Holmes’ signing came after tight ends Mike Gesicki, Cethan Carter and Adam Shaheen were all placed on the NFL’s COVID-19 reserve list.

The 30-year-old Holmes does have some past NFL experience, playing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017 and 2018.

The three tight ends were placed on the COVID-19 reserve list after Dolphins co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach George Godsey tested positive for the highly contagious virus. The players were deemed to have been in close contact with Godsey.

Florida has been one of the nation’s hotspots with regard to the recent resurgence of the virus.

Given the fact that Godsey has previously been vaccinated, the risk of serious illness appears to be minimal, so he and the tight ends in question should be back in camp later in the month.

Surely, Holmes will look to make the most out of this unique opportunity.
