Report: ‘Nothing percolating’ in regards to Miami Dolphins extension talks with Mike Gesicki

Miami Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but it appears the Dolphins aren’t intent on extending him just yet.

According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins are taking more of a wait-and-see approach with Gesicki after he’s shown flashes of brilliance the past two seasons.

“The Dolphins, in recent months, have extended two members of their 2018 draft class — kicker Jason Sanders and linebacker Jerome Baker — but we hear there is nothing percolating on the contract front with tight end Mike Gesicki at this time,” Jackson wrote.

“It’s unclear what to make of that. Perhaps the Dolphins are waiting until everyone gets back from vacation. Perhaps they’re waiting to see how Gesicki and rookie third-round pick Hunter Long play this year.

“Regardless, Gesicki is in good position to snag a very good contract in free agency next March if he doesn’t re-sign with the Dolphins before that.”

In three seasons with the Dolphins, Gesicki has totaled 126 catches for 1,475 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He’s seen his catches, yards and touchdowns increase in each of his three seasons, but the Dolphins may want to see him do it again in 2021 before committing to a long-term extension.

Last season, Gesicki caught 53 passes for 703 yards and six scores. If he can mesh with Tua Tagovailoa in 2021, the Dolphins would be smart to bring him back to keep their young quarterback happy.
