DeVonta Smith says he’s taking Alabama QB Mac Jones over Tua Tagovailoa without hesitation

University of Alabama wide receiver and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith had an interesting answer to a question about which quarterback he’d prefer in a predraft interview.

Smith, who played with Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones at Alabama, reportedly chose Jones over the Miami Dolphins quarterback.

“One team asked Smith, point blank: Tua Tagovailoa or Jones?” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote. “The question was barely finished before Smith answered: Mac Jones. He was bold and definitive about it, as I heard it. And of course, it’s logical to some degree. Jones was Smith’s quarterback for his historic, 117-catch, 1,856-yard, 23-touchdown season. But to me, it’s notable because it feels almost like Jones is going to have to answer for Tagovailoa’s so-so rookie year, in that both guys had an obscene amount of talent (headlined by a better receiver group than probably a handful of NFL teams) around them.”

While Smith did have a historic season with Jones, it is interesting that he chose him so quickly over Tagovailoa.

During his rookie season, Tagovailoa threw for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns and five picks.

He made just nine starts, but the Dolphins were 6-3 in those nine games. Still, Tagovailoa’s rookie season was a little underwhelming.

The Dolphins have the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and they very well could take Smith with that selection.

However, with Smith already thinking Jones is better, it leaves something to be desired from Tagovailoa before the Dolphins fully commit to him as their franchise guy.
