Report: Miami Dolphins could target recently fired head coach for offensive coordinator job

The Miami Dolphins are in the market for a new offensive coordinator after Chan Gailey resigned on Wednesday.

According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Miami is expected to reach out to former Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien to fill the vacancy.

“Multiple former head coaches with coordinator experience also are available, including Anthony Lynn (dismissed by the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday), Doug Marrone (dismissed by [Jacksonville] Jaguars on Monday) and former Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien,” Jackson wrote.

“Two league sources said they expect Miami to reach out to O’Brien to at least gauge his interest.

“O’Brien was 52-48 and made the playoffs four times as the Texans’ coach before being dismissed Oct. 5 after an 0-4 start this past season. He worked with Flores in New England and was the Patriots’ offensive coordinator in 2011 before leaving for the head coaching job at Penn State.

“O’Brien’s decision to give the Dolphins a treasure trove of draft picks for Laremy Tunsil ultimately could end up being one of the biggest boosts to the team’s ahead-of-schedule rebuild.”

As Jackson mentioned, O’Brien is the reason why the Dolphins hold the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

While he may not be a great general manager, O’Brien did have success molding Deshaun Watson into one of the league’s best quarterbacks.

If Miami thinks he can work the same magic with Tua Tagovailoa, O’Brien could be the team’s third offensive coordinator in as many years.
