With just over a week before their first game, the Miami Dolphins have decided to part ways with reserve quarterback Josh Rosen, who they acquired from the Arizona Cardinals last season.
The move came after efforts to trade Rosen failed, with Dolphins head coach Brian Flores also indicating that the team is comfortable about the health of rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. That comfort level allowed the Dolphins to let Rosen go and could lead to a spot on the practice squad for free agent quarterback Jake Rudock.
The Dolphins had acquired Rosen last year, giving up a second- and fifth-round pick to the Cardinals to obtain him. Flores chalked up the prospect of losing those future selections as a reality that all teams face.
The expectation is that veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will be behind center for the Dolphins’ scheduled opener on Sept. 13 against the New England Patriots.
However, Tagovailoa is definitely seen as the Dolphins’ quarterback of the future, which is why the team has been so cautious in making sure he’s fully healthy when he’s ready to take the field.
Rosen was the 10th player taken overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, yet now finds himself looking to achieve his potential with what would be his third team in as many seasons.
