On Thursday, the Miami Dolphins announced that they were trading running back Kalen Ballage to the New York Jets for a conditional draft pick.
Hours later, they announced the pick that they acquired.
The return may seem like small potatoes, but there is no doubt that some of the most successful franchises in the NFL are also the franchises that are able to stockpile late-round picks year after year.
It’s great to see that the Dolphins were able to do that in this case, especially based on earlier reports that the team was going to release Ballage before the trade materialized.
While the Dolphins have major pieces in place, they are still building towards the future. A conditional seventh-rounder may feel inconsequential, but it’s impossible to know what diamond in the rough the front office may find in next year’s draft as a result.
As for Ballage, hopefully he is able to find success in his new home in New York.
