Miami Dolphins News: Dolphins Claim Rookie Tight End Off Waivers

Miami Dolphins preseason practices are in full swing, but that doesn’t mean that the team’s front office isn’t still looking for ways to improve the roster.

On Monday, the Dolphins claimed undrafted rookie tight end Nate Wieting after he was cut by the Cleveland Browns.

Wieting showed solid upside during his career at University of Iowa.

He started his collegiate football career as a walk-on and went on to be named a starter prior to his senior year.

He enjoyed his best season as a senior. He finished the year with 10 receptions for 117 yards in five appearances. Unfortunately, he missed some time during his final season due to a calf injury

While those numbers certainly do not jump off the stat sheet, his physical abilities are what make him attractive at the next level.

At 6-foot-4, 244 pounds, Wieting certainly has the frame to make it as an NFL tight end. Beyond that, he displays quick releases off of the line and an ability to fluidly get into his routes. He also displays an ability to adjust to errant throws.

Considering the roster restrictions that have been put in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that the Dolphins have serious interest in the tight end.

It will be interesting to see if he can carve out a place for himself on the team going forward.
