During the final day of the 2020 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins sent one of their fifth-round selections to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for running back Matt Breida.
Breida is a 25-year-old player who was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2017 out of Georgia Southern University.
During the 2018 season, he was a member of the Niners’ starting backfield for most of that year, but had otherwise been used as a running option off the bench.
During Breida’s three seasons with the 49ers, he gained 1,902 yards and scored six touchdowns on the ground.
Breida will also be a passing option for Dolphins signal-callers in 2020, after having grabbed 67 passes and reaching the end zone on four occasions.
When Brieda became a restricted free agent last month, the 49ers had placed a second-round tender on him. After no teams chose to give up that high of a draft pick to sign him, he signed a one-year tender with the Niners on April 16.
One of the areas that the Dolphins were looking to bolster during the offseason was the running back position.
During free agency, the Dolphins signed running back Jordan Howard, with the expectation that he’d help inject some offense into the lineup.
Adding Breida should help either spell Howard from time to time or give Ryan Fitzpatrick another passing option. Given the experience Brieda already has, his acquisition is a low-cost risk that could pay off down the road.
