Report: Miami Dolphins Among Frontrunners to Sign Jameis Winston

With the rebuilding Miami Dolphins continuing to make upgrades to their roster, a new report indicates that the Dolphins are one of the main contenders to sign former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston.

The 26-year-old Winston was the top overall pick of the 2015 NFL draft, but never managed to give the Buccaneers a consistent performance behind center in his five seasons.

Last season, Winston had career-highs in passing yardage (5,109 yards) and touchdown passes (33), but also led the league in interceptions with 33 on the year.

Once the Bucs signed future Hall of Famer Tom Brady earlier this month, it was clear that Winston’s time in Tampa had come to an end.

Winston played collegiately at Florida State University, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2013, the youngest player in college football history to win the prestigious award.

However, Winston’s lack of maturity led to some controversies during his final season at Florida State.

The fact that the Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars are the top two contenders suggest that Winston is eager to remain in the Sunshine State.

The likelihood of Winston signing with the New Orleans Saints seems remote, given the continuing presence of another future Hall of Famer at quarterback, Drew Brees.

No time frame exists as far as when Winston will make his decision. If he chooses to sign with Jacksonville, the Dolphins may make a more concerted effort to pick a quarterback with the fifth overall selection in next month’s draft.
