The Miami Dolphins could add another running back after losing De’Von Achane for the season, with head coach Jeff Hafley saying Monday that he and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan will discuss potential additions.

Hafley expressed “total confidence” in the backs already on the roster while acknowledging those personnel discussions. His comments leave Miami with both internal options to evaluate and the possibility of bringing in help.

The discussions follow Achane suffering a season-ending ACL tear against the Kansas City Chiefs. Miami subsequently placed him on injured reserve, confirming the need for a longer-term response to the injury Hafley had addressed after Sunday’s game.

Hafley’s comments about additions did not identify a target or establish that a signing was imminent. They did make clear that confidence in the remaining players would not prevent a discussion about strengthening the group.

Jaylen Wright’s health complicates Miami’s options

Ollie Gordon II and Jaylen Wright are Miami’s remaining active-roster running backs, but Wright was unavailable against Kansas City because of a stinger and foot injury.

Jarquez Hunter and Carlos Washington provide additional options on the practice squad, according to NFL.com’s account of the backfield situation.

Wright’s health makes the decision more complicated than simply moving each player up a spot on the depth chart. If he remains unavailable, Miami would need to account for the absence of another back while preparing to play without Achane.

His return would give the staff another active-roster option as it considers how to divide the work. Hunter and Washington offer an internal route to reinforcing the group.

Their presence also gives Hafley and Sullivan a comparison point when considering outside additions: whether bringing in another player would offer more than promoting someone already in the building.

Hafley calls for a collective response without Achane

Miami is losing a 2026 team captain who earned a Pro Bowl selection last season. Replacing his role requires decisions about receiving work and pass protection as well as rushing attempts.

“This is a resilient group, and everyone will have to pitch in,” Hafley said.

That puts the focus on how Miami assembles the backfield as a whole. Wright’s availability will help determine the immediate need, while the practice-squad options give the Dolphins a way to add depth internally.

Hafley and Sullivan’s discussions will address whether another addition can improve that mix.
