If you ask NFL veteran offensive tackle Chris Hubbard how heโ€™d handle protecting Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, he wonโ€™t just tell you about blocking assignments or footwork. For Hubbard, itโ€™s personal.

โ€œAs a unit, you want to be on the same accord,โ€ Hubbard told me.

โ€œBut back there, that quarterback? Thatโ€™s your brother in battle. You protect him like your own flesh and blood.โ€

Hubbard, currently a free agent entering his 12th NFL season, knows the stakes when it comes to a player like Tagovailoa โ€” a talented signal-caller whose flashes of brilliance come with real concerns about his durability. To Hubbard, Tuaโ€™s magic can only be fully unlocked if heโ€™s upright and trusted.

โ€œIf heโ€™s upright, heโ€™s able to do some magical things, man,โ€ Hubbard emphasized. โ€œWe see a lot of glitz and glamour from Tua, but when heโ€™s taking those hits, itโ€™s like, โ€˜Aww man.โ€™ Heโ€™s out there making different adjustments by trying to do too much.โ€

That sentiment isnโ€™t just rooted in X’s and O’s. Itโ€™s layered in brotherhood, experience and even loss.

Mental Health: ‘People suffer silently’

Long before he lined up in the trenches, Chris Hubbard experienced the kind of heartbreak that still fuels him today. In high school, he lost a teammate to suicide; a player battling severe depression who confided in Hubbard far too late.

โ€œI think thatโ€™s why I wanted to be so close with mental health,โ€ Hubbard told me. โ€œSo many people suffer inside and silently. When I got into the league, it just wasnโ€™t talked about enough.โ€

That silence inspired his advocacy, which he wears as passionately as his cleats.

โ€œIt was near and dear to my heart,โ€ he said. โ€œThe challenges Iโ€™ve faced, a lot of things I kept in. But weโ€™ve gotta change that.โ€

Giving Kevin Love His Flowers

In the sports world, visibility matters and Hubbard gave credit to former NBA All-Star Kevin Love, who helped open the floodgates for a new generation of athletes to prioritize mental wellness.

โ€œI look up to him,โ€ said Hubbard, who spent time in Cleveland during Loveโ€™s Cavaliers tenure.

โ€œJust because we play a professional sport doesnโ€™t mean we donโ€™t have problems. Kevin being vocal helped all of us.โ€

Life as a Father and Free Agent

Off the field, Hubbard is focused on being a father and enjoying lifeโ€™s quieter moments even if his football clock is still ticking.

โ€œFatherhood is everything to me,โ€ he said. โ€œMy job is to make sure my kids are safe, they are loved and they are ready for everything life throws at them.โ€

And this summer?

โ€œIโ€™m on the island, man. Virgin Islands. Working out, staying ready. Teams are interested,โ€ he added. โ€œI know when the time comes, Iโ€™ll be ready. Whatever team, wherever.โ€

On Lamar vs. Tua

Hubbard offered a unique lens on how different elite quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Tua Tagovailoa operate.

โ€œLamar? Heโ€™s fast as I donโ€™t know what,โ€ Hubbard laughed. โ€œHeโ€™s got that escapability. He knows exactly how much time he has. With Tua, heโ€™s still learning some of those things. Heโ€™s had to figure it out the hard way โ€” but thatโ€™s how quarterbacks grow. You make mistakes, you build calluses.โ€

Yet, despite stylistic differences, Hubbard has nothing but respect for both.

โ€œTua can throw a deep ball like no other. Itโ€™s absolutely amazing to see.โ€

Whether itโ€™s protecting Pro Bowl quarterbacks or passing the torch to his kids, Chris Hubbard carries his purpose with clarity. And if the Dolphins โ€” or any other team โ€” come calling?

Heโ€™s ready.
