From the outside looking in, the Miami Dolphins have a clear justification to give up on this season and become sellers at the trade deadline. With the team 2-6, it’s hard to envision a scenario where the Dolphins get back in the playoff race, and they have some talented players they could potentially turn into draft picks.
Still, the Dolphins apparently aren’t planning on punting their season away and “will treat the trade deadline as such.”
“While the Dolphins might not be moving a bunch of players at the deadline, they are open to trading pass rusher Matthew Judon,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote. “He’s the name I keep hearing when it comes to their rushers. Teams say Jaelan Phillips has the most value of Miami’s edge rushers, but there’s not much buzz that Miami is motivated to move him so far. Overall, Miami is not punting on the 2025 season and will treat the trade deadline as such, from what I was told. The Dolphins won’t shut down a good deal but are not shopping a litany of key players.”
Fowler’s interesting note on Phillips comes not long after ESPN’s Adam Schefter said he believes the team will trade at least one of Phillips or veteran Bradley Chubb.
The Dolphins have their work cut out for them with the hole they’ve put themselves in, but when looking at things with a glass half-full mentality, this season might not be lost just yet.
Miami is on the heels of probably its best all-around performance of the season against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8. Not only did the Dolphins finish with a whopping 34 points and score seven-plus points in all four quarters, but quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was at the top of his game.
After he threw just one touchdown in his last two starts combined before taking on Atlanta, he racked up four passing touchdowns in Sunday’s win. Perhaps equally as important, he didn’t throw a single interception in the process. Taking care of the ball has been a major problem for him all season, as he’s thrown 10 picks, tied for the most in the NFL.
The Dolphins were equally successful on the less glamorous side of the ball as well against Atlanta, as their defensive unit held the Falcons to a measly 10 points, including just three in the first half.
Maybe the Dolphins’ fantastic all-around performance against Atlanta has instilled hope in the front office that the tank isn’t empty this season. Miami can win its second game in a row when it takes on the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday.
