Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is certainly getting up there in age, as he’s on the other side of 80, and someone might have to succeed him as owner of the team sooner rather than later. However, all signs point to him keeping the team in the family for years to come, as he has already crowned his daughter as his successor.
“Ross, 85, has rejected overtures from hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin; designated his daughter Jennifer as his successor; and has given a significant role to son-in-law Dan Sillman, an experienced sports executive who is married to Ross’ daughter, Kim,” Barry Jackson wrote.
Not only that, but Stephen Ross reportedly rejected a huge $10 billion offer to purchase the Dolphins, Hard Rock Stadium — Miami’s home stadium — and the Miami Grand Prix.
“In the past two years, Ross rejected a $10 billion offer from an unidentified buyer to purchase the team, Hard Rock Stadium and the Miami Grand Prix,” Jackson wrote. “Griffin reportedly has made two attempts to purchase the Dolphins.”
Stephen Ross’ desire to hold onto the franchise maybe isn’t thrilling news to some fans of the team for several reasons. For one, his tenure with the Dolphins hasn’t been all that fruitful. In his time as the majority owner, Miami has qualified for the playoffs just thrice and is still looking for its first playoff victory under his ownership.
Maybe just as importantly, Miami isn’t putting out a good product right now, and that’s putting things mildly. The 2025 season has gone nothing short of woefully for the Dolphins up to this point, as with just one win through their first seven games, they have one of the worst records in all of the AFC.
Then there’s the recent rumor indicating that Stephen Ross is “fond” of head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier and wants to give them more time to turn things around when so many Dolphins fans want to see them gone.
Grier certainly has whiffed on his fair share of moves over his years as general manager, and McDaniel is on track for his second consecutive losing season as Miami’s head coach. Miami made the playoffs in his first two seasons as head coach, but he’s coached the team to just a 9-15 regular-season record since then.
All in all, for a franchise that is seemingly desperate for change, if Stephen Ross were to pass ownership down to his daughter as expected, that decision could leave plenty of Dolphins faithful miffed, and rightfully so.
