Not long ago, there seemed to be a real possibility that Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith would be getting traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. NFL insider Adam Schefter reported recently that the Dolphins and Steelers have had trade discussions regarding Smith.

However, Schefter has since indicated that Dolphins fans shouldn’t expect the standout tight end to get traded to Pittsburgh. On Tuesday, he revealed that the Steelers are not expected to make a deal for Smith, but they are set to host wide receiver Gabe Davis as they look to bolster their receiver room.

“The Steelers are not expected to trade for Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith after engaging in talks with Miami but now will host free agent Gabe Davis on a visit this week in their search for receiving help, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday,” Marcel Louis-Jacques and Michael DiRocco wrote.

“Davis is scheduled to travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to visit with the Steelers on Thursday, the sources told Schefter. Davis had previously made free agent visits last month with the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.”

Smith’s agent is none other than Drew Rosenhaus, who also represents Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and Rosenhaus made it clear that his client wants to stick around in Miami. He said Smith “would definitely like to stay” with the Dolphins organization.

Dolphins fans should be thrilled that it appears the Steelers won’t be landing Smith, as he was a crucial part of Miami’s offensive attack in the 2024 season. He didn’t head into the campaign universally perceived as an elite player at the tight end position, but he put up numbers that stacked up with almost every player at the spot in the league.

He ended up with 884 receiving yards, eight receiving touchdowns and 55 first downs receiving across 17 contests played (six starts) in his maiden season with the Dolphins. Smith was tied for the second-most receiving touchdowns of any tight end a season ago. Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews led the league with 11.

Smith went on to earn the very first Pro Bowl selection of his NFL career so far as well.

Assuming Smith doesn’t get traded to the Steelers or another team and is still a member of the Dolphins at the start of the 2025 season, Dolphins fans will hope that he can build upon his career year in the 2024 campaign and be even more of a nightmare for opposing defenses in his second season with the franchise.
