Miami Dolphins insider predicts Zach Wilson will be team’s No. 2 QB or else his ‘career is over’

The Miami Dolphins haven’t made a whole lot of splashes in free agency this offseason. However, one of the team’s more notable additions came when it signed a former New York Jets quarterback to serve as a safety blanket behind Tua Tagovailoa.

The Dolphins inked signal-caller Zach Wilson to a one-year, $6 million deal after he logged 33 combined starts with the Jets in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons. He was a member of the Denver Broncos last season but didn’t see any action, with Denver announcing him as its No. 3 quarterback going into the season.

One X user asked Dolphins insider Omar Kelly whether he thinks Wilson or rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers will be Miami’s No. 2 signal-caller, and according to Kelly, Wilson will be the No. 2 or else his “career is over.”

If that’s the case, Wilson maybe should expect to hear his name called with Miami this coming season more than he did in his one campaign with the Broncos. After all, Tagovailoa is a proven starting quarterback but has had difficulties staying on the field over the course of his career.

Tagovailoa has played more than 13 games in a single campaign just once since he was drafted by the Dolphins with one of the top picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he was limited to just 11 appearances in the 2024 season.

Wilson also has quite a lot of NFL experience for a potential No. 2 quarterback, and that could come in handy if head coach Mike McDaniel needs to rely on him to lead the offense for any sizable stretch.

For context, quarterback Tyler Huntley, who the Dolphins had to turn to in several games last season, had nine NFL starts prior to joining Miami compared to Wilson’s 33 starts.

Hopefully, Wilson will make the most of his opportunities should Tagovailoa miss any games this coming season, but there’s certainly reason to be skeptical about how he would play, even with the experience he brings to the table. Namely, he’s never been great at taking care of the ball at the highest level, as he’s thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in the NFL.
