NFL executive on Miami Dolphins: ‘I could see this being the start of a little reset for them’

Free agency is quieting down in the NFL now, and the Miami Dolphins haven’t exactly made many flashy moves during the period.

Maybe Miami’s most notable addition in free agency so far has been former Pittsburgh Steelers guard James Daniels, who agreed to a three-year deal with the Dolphins.

While Miami still has time to make some more additions this offseason, one unnamed NFL executive thinks the Dolphins may be navigating the start of a “little reset” as a team.

“It feels like a team that invested in some older players the last couple years and it did not work out for them,” the executive told The Athletic. “I could see this being the start of a little reset for them.”

Quarterback Zach Wilson stands out as another noteworthy addition that Miami has made in free agency along with Daniels.

He joined the Dolphins on a one-year contract. Wilson had a rocky tenure with the New York Jets and then didn’t see the field with the Denver Broncos last season, but he has 33 starts at the NFL level under his belt and gives Miami some experience at the quarterback position behind Tua Tagovailoa.

Wilson figures to serve as a safety blanket for the Dolphins if Tagovailoa is bitten by the injury bug once again in the 2025 campaign. Tagovailoa was limited to 11 appearances in the 2024 season thanks to head and hip injuries.

For as puzzling as Miami’s approach in free agency after a down season might be to some folks at first glance, a report from the Miami Herald‘s Barry Jackson earlier this week offered some good info.

He reported on Thursday that Miami hasn’t called about some of the top remaining free agents at positions of need. Jackson thinks that may be because the team is waiting to see who it can pick up at those positions in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.

It should be interesting to see if Miami makes any more signings in the days ahead. If Miami continues to be quiet in terms of making moves for the remainder of the offseason, that would seemingly support the executive’s claim that the Dolphins might be amid a reset.
