If the Miami Dolphins can’t figure out a way to retain safety Jevon Holland soon, he will hit free agency in March. Holland has spent the entirety of his NFL career to this point in Miami but is on the heels of maybe his least productive season in the league.
Holland weighed in on how he’s feeling ahead of his potential free agency and compared the experience to being recruited by college football teams. He played two seasons at the University of Oregon before he was drafted by the Dolphins in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
“I’m feeling good,” Holland said. “It’s kinda like being recruited again almost, you know? Like in college โ I’m just letting the chips fall where they may. I know I got two of the best agents, Kyle McCarthy, and then we’ll get it working on it. So, I’m gonna just let them do they thing. But for me personally, man, I’m just waiting until the options are sitting in front of me and I can pick and choose.”
There is less than one month separating now and the start of NFL free agency. It is scheduled to kick off on March 12.
It’s hard to argue that Holland hasn’t regressed since starting his pro career in the 2021 season. In his fourth NFL season, he totaled career-lows in combined tackles and solo tackles despite starting every one of the 15 contests he appeared in.
One writer predicted earlier in the month that Holland will spurn an opportunity to remain with the Dolphins to join a solidified Super Bowl contender. USA Today foresees Holland signing with a divisional rival of Miami in the Buffalo Bills.
Perhaps Holland’s skill set would help a Buffalo team that’s consistently made the playoffs in recent years to finally get over the hump and win a Super Bowl. Buffalo has qualified for the playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons but hasn’t even appeared in a Super Bowl in that span.
If Holland’s tenure in Miami soon comes to an end, his appearance in the Dolphins’ season finale against the New York Jets on Jan. 5 would mark the last game of his stint with the team. In a game Miami lost by double digits to finish the season with an 8-9 record, he contributed seven combined tackles, four solo tackles and three assisted tackles.
Only time will tell whether Holland will join another NFL team or still be a member of the Dolphins by the time the 2025 season kicks off.
