Ex-Dolphins star says Tyreek shouldn’t be a captain: ‘I’d be disappointed in the team if they voted for him’

Plenty of people have questioned wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s leadership after he seemingly quit on the Miami Dolphins in their season finale against the New York Jets on Jan. 5 and then expressed to the media that he was possibly ready for his Dolphins tenure to end.

One former Miami star has made it clear that he hopes Hill doesn’t get voted in as a captain in the 2025 campaign. Retired Dolphins defender Kim Bokamper said that if the team votes Hill in, he’ll “be disappointed” in the Dolphins.

ESPN’s Ryan Clark told Hill to his face recently that the way he conducted himself in Week 18 was “not leadership.”

Hill was one of eight Dolphins voted in to be a team captain last season, giving him the honor for a third straight year with Miami. The selection wasn’t a surprise at the time, especially since he led the entire league in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns during the 2023 campaign.

But when factoring in Hill’s actions during and after last month’s game against the Jets as well as his down year from a statistical standpoint, he seemingly isn’t a shoo-in to be a captain again in the 2025 season.

Granted, maybe the fact that Hill totaled less than 1,000 receiving yards in a season for the first time this decade wasn’t all his fault. It could be partly chalked up to poor injury luck from signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa was limited to just 11 games thanks to head and hip injuries. Hill himself also played through injury.

Reserve quarterback Tyler Huntley started the lion’s share of games that Tagovailoa was sidelined for, but he gave the Dolphins sporadic production. He threw as many touchdowns as interceptions in his first season in Miami, and the team had a record of just 2-3 in his five starts.

Here’s to hoping that Hill has already put his lackluster 2024 campaign behind him and shifted his focus to returning to the player he was earlier on in his Dolphins tenure. He totaled more than 1,700 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons with the team.
