Report: Pittsburgh Steelers sign former Miami Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson

The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly have signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson.

A seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Thompson appeared in 10 games for the Dolphins since the start of the 2022 season, making three starts. He posted a 1-2 record as Miami’s quarterback, throwing for 721 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Thompson also started the Dolphins’ playoff game in the 2022 season against the Buffalo Bills since Tua Tagovailoa was out with an injury. In that game, Thompson completed 18 of his 45 pass attempts for 220 yards, one score and two interceptions. Miami ended up losing that game 34-31.

During the 2024 season, Thompson made one start for the Dolphins in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks. He ended up leaving that game early with a rib injury.

In that matchup, Thompson completed 13 of his 19 passes for 107 yards. He also took five sacks against Seattle.

Miami ended up turning to Tyler Huntley as its backup quarterback with Tua Tagovailoa missing several games in the 2024 campaign. Now, it appears that Thompson will get a fresh start with the Steelers organization.

Pittsburgh made the playoffs in the 2024 season, but it lost badly to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, ending its season. After starting the 2024 regular season 10-3, the Steelers lost their final four games of the regular season, costing them a chance to win the AFC North division.

Veteran Russell Wilson and former first-round pick Justin Fields played quarterback for the Steelers in the 2024 season, but neither player is under contract for the 2025 season.

While it’s unlikely that the Steelers plan on making Thompson their starting quarterback in the 2025 season given his limited experience, he’ll likely get a chance to compete for a spot on the Steelers’ roster.

As for the Dolphins, they are focused on improving their roster ahead of the 2025 season after missing the playoffs in the 2024 campaign. Miami finished with an 8-9 record, the first time that it went under .500 in a season when coached by Mike McDaniel.

McDaniel had led Miami to playoff appearances in the 2022 season and the 2023 campaign. Hopefully, the Dolphins can find a viable option behind Tagovailoa in case the star quarterback goes down once again next season.
