Report: Dolphins worked out former first-round offensive lineman this week

The Miami Dolphins’ 2024 regular season is nearing a conclusion. Miami has played 16 of the 17 games on its schedule and will wrap up the campaign with a bout against the New York Jets on Jan. 5.

The Dolphins are still seemingly looking at options for bolstering their offensive line, as the team reportedly worked out four offensive linemen on Tuesday. Namely, Miami worked out former Las Vegas Raiders first-round draft pick Alex Leatherwood, who was chosen with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

“The Dolphins worked out four offensive linemen on Tuesday, including a former Raiders first-round pick,” Barry Jackson wrote.

“As noted by Aaron Wilson and the NFL transaction wire, the Dolphins worked out tackles Alex Leatherwood, Lucas Niang and Cameron Erving and guard Gunner Britton. None have played in a regular-season game this year.”

Leatherwood got off to a promising start to his NFL career, as he started in every one of Las Vegas’ 17 games as a rookie in the 2021 season. He was a consistent presence for a Raiders team that ended up with a record of 10-7 and qualified for the playoffs.

But ever since he carved out an auspicious inaugural season in the NFL, he hasn’t had many opportunities to make an impact at the highest level. He last appeared in only four contests with the Chicago Bears in the 2022 campaign, and he recovered one fumble during that span.

Leatherwood spent much of this season as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, though he didn’t suit up in a single game with the squad before he was cut by the team back in December.

Miami’s offensive line has been less than stellar this season. The offensive line has given up a whopping 39 sacks through 16 games played, and only 14 teams have allowed more sacks to this point.

The Dolphins allowed quarterback Tyler Huntley to be sacked four times in the team’s win over the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 29 to boot.

Miami can pick up its third win in a row and finish the campaign with a record above the .500 mark with a victory over the Jets on Sunday. Thankfully for the Dolphins, the Jets have one of the worst records in the AFC East division at 4-12 and have won just two of their seven home games at this juncture.

New York’s last home victory came when it beat the Houston Texans by eight points on Oct. 31.
