Report: Skylar Thompson could not dress himself after suffering injury vs. Seahawks

The Miami Dolphins’ quarterback situation went from bad to worse on Sunday when second-stringer Skylar Thompson — starting in place of the injured Tua Tagovailoa — suffered an injury of his own against the Seattle Seahawks.

The injury apparently kept Thompson from being able to dress himself after the game, according to a report, and staff had to pack up his things.

“Quarterback Skylar Thompson – who left with what the team called a chest injury – couldn’t dress himself after the game, per our Omar Kelly in Seattle,” wrote Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “The staff had to pack up his things.

“Tim Boyle was heard telling Tyler Huntley to ‘get ready.'”

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel described Thompson’s situation as a “rib injury that’s pretty painful.”

“Half of the frustration for him is he was really trying to find a way to not to come out of the game,” McDaniel said Sunday. “Ultimately, it was pretty painful. He fought through it. We’ll have a chance to look at him tomorrow.”

McDaniel also spoke about Thompson’s pre-injury performance against the Seahawks.

“The positives were he took care of the ball,” McDaniel said. “I think Skylar did a good job operating the offense. There needed to be a lot better job in preparation on my part. Eleven penalties is not good enough.”

Before leaving the game, Thompson completed 13 of his 19 passes for 107 yards. He didn’t throw a touchdown or an interception.

Boyle, who came on in relief of Thompson, completed seven of his 13 passes for 79 yards. He also didn’t throw a touchdown or an interception.

Amid their injury troubles, the Dolphins mustered just three points against the Seahawks, and they were held scoreless over the final three quarters. Seattle won without a sweat, 24-3.

If Thompson’s injury keeps him out for a bit, the Dolphins may have to rely on Boyle and/or Huntley in Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans. They could also pursue outside help if they want to.

Tagovailoa won’t be eligible to return to action until Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals. The Dolphins have three more games to get through until then.

Miami, currently 1-2, certainly can’t afford to lose all three of those games, and winning just one of them would still have the team in quite a hole at 2-4. The games in question will come against the Titans, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts.

The hopeful return of Tagovailoa, who led the NFL in passing yards last season, could be the only thing standing between the Dolphins and a disastrous 2024 season. With any luck, he’ll be able to return to action, stay healthy and lead Miami back to the postseason.
