Anthony Weaver ‘hopeful’ that Jalen Ramsey will play in season opener vs. Jaguars

The Miami Dolphins’ newest defensive coordinator — Anthony Weaver — appears to be optimistic regarding cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s chances of taking the field when the Dolphins kick off their 2024 regular season against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Dolphins hired Weaver to replace Vic Fangio, whom Miami parted ways with earlier in the year.

Ramsey is dealing with a hamstring injury at the moment, and he didn’t appear in any of the Dolphins’ three games during the preseason, including Miami’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 23.

However, Miami’s defense did a commendable job of limiting scores in his absence.

The Dolphins allowed only 14.3 points per game during the preseason, and the team’s best defensive performance during that span came against the Washington Commanders on Aug. 17, when Miami held Washington to only six points. The Commanders also failed to score a single point in three of the four quarters of the contest.

Fortunately for fans of the Dolphins, they won’t have to do a whole lot more waiting before they find out if Ramsey will be good to go for Miami’s regular-season opener considering the start of the 2024 campaign is imminent. The Dolphins will take on the Jaguars on Sept. 8, which is only days away at this time.

Ramsey was limited to only 10 games during the 2023 regular season — his first season as a member of the Dolphins — but was a high-level contributor when on the field. He totaled three interceptions, 22 combined tackles, 18 solo tackles and four assisted tackles and also earned a Pro Bowl appearance.

Furthermore, he played in Miami’s playoff matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs and finished with four solo tackles, five combined tackles, one tackle for loss and one assisted tackle in a game the Dolphins lost by a final score of 26-7.

If Ramsey is feeling healthy enough to play against the Jaguars in a few days, his presence should only help to further bolster the team’s defensive unit.
