Nik Needham breaks his silence after surprising cut by Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins cornerback Nik Needham took to the social media platform X after news surfaced of the Dolphins’ decision to release him ahead of the start of the 2024 regular season. Needham was one of the longest-tenured players on the team prior to getting cut.

Despite the fact that Needham went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft following his college football career, he managed to carve out a sizable stint with the Dolphins. He played five seasons with the team, from the 2019 campaign through the 2023 season.

During his first three seasons with the Dolphins, he was an important part of Miami’s defensive unit. He played in 12-plus games in every one of those seasons and started a combined 22 games during that span.

Needham also was a consistent threat to come up with interceptions in the earlier part of his Dolphins tenure, as he totaled six across his first three years.

But Needham saw his role with the Dolphins dwindle in each of his last two seasons in Miami. In his penultimate season as a member of the Dolphins, the 2022 season, he appeared in just six regular-season games and totaled 21 combined tackles, 14 solo tackles and seven assisted tackles.

In the 2023 regular season, Needham put up career-lows across the board and was debatably a non-factor for Miami. He played in 10 of the Dolphins’ 17 games, yet he mustered only seven combined tackles, four solo tackles and three assists on tackles.

Needham played in Miami’s lone playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs as well but didn’t finish with even a single tackle in what was an underwhelming performance from the Dolphins’ defense as a whole. Miami’s defense allowed Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to score a whopping 26 points, and Kansas City put points on the board in every one of the four quarters of the contest.

The 27-year-old played a limited role in his last season with the Dolphins, but fans of the team should still be thankful for his contributions during a long stint in Miami.
