The Miami Dolphins and star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million deal on Friday that includes $167 million worth of guaranteed money, and several of Tagovailoa’s teammates congratulated him on the lucrative contract extension.
Among those who reacted to the news on X (formerly known as Twitter) was Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was one of the better offensive players in the NFL during the 2023 regular season along with Tagovailoa.

This news comes just days after Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel provided an update regarding Tagovailoa’s contract situation.
Tagovailoa has one year left on his rookie contract before his extension kicks in. The 26-year-old is set to earn just over $23 million in the 2024 campaign after the Dolphins made the decision to exercise Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option earlier in the offseason.
The signal-caller received an extension just months after he enjoyed the best season of his pro career from a statistical standpoint. In the 2023 regular season, he threw for 4,000-plus yards for the first time since being drafted by the Dolphins and even led the entire league in total passing yards with 4,624.
Tagovailoa also threw a career-high 29 passing touchdowns in his fourth NFL season.
Interestingly, despite the gaudy numbers that Tagovailoa put up last season, he signed a less lucrative extension than Trevor Lawrence did this offseason. Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million deal ($142 million guaranteed) with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Also, a report surfaced one month ago that indicated the Dolphins were adamant about not paying Tagovailoa on the same scale as Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
If Tagovailoa can help the Dolphins win at least one playoff game next season, that would seemingly strengthen his case for being worthy of such an expensive contract. He has yet to lead Miami to so much as one playoff win in his career so far, and the Dolphins lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in their first playoff game last season.
