ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the Miami Dolphins are farther away from inking Tua Tagovailoa to a contract extension than the Green Bay Packers are from extending their quarterback, Jordan Love.

“I don’t think they’re as far along right now as the Packers and Jordan Love, obviously,” Schefter said. “I think both sides still would like to get it done. The Dolphins have been very open about the fact Tua is their guy into the future, but the question is, what is the number?”

After two forgettable seasons to kick off his NFL career, Love solidified himself as a starting-caliber quarterback in his third year in the league. He started every one of Green Bay’s 17 games during the 2023 regular season and totaled 4,159 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns compared to only 11 interceptions.

Additionally, with Love leading the Packers’ offense, the team ended the regular season with a solid 9-8 record, which was the second-best of any team in the NFC North behind only the Detroit Lions.

Love also helped the Packers reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2021 campaign. In the team’s wild-card matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay won by a final score of 48-32 before dropping its next playoff game to the San Francisco 49ers.

But for as well as Love played in his third NFL season, Tagovailoa seemingly enjoyed an even better season from an individual standpoint. Like Love, Tagovailoa didn’t miss a single one of Miami’s regular-season contests, and he also led the NFL in total passing yards with 4,624.

Tagovailoa became just one of nine quarterbacks in the history of the league to accumulate 4,600-plus receiving yards in their fourth season in the NFL. Dan Marino, Kurt Warner and Matthew Stafford are among the small list of signal-callers who accomplished such a feat.

But Tagovailoa’s Dolphins didn’t experience as much playoff success as Love’s Packers did. After all, the Dolphins were thoroughly outplayed in their first playoff game โ€” which came against the Kansas City Chiefs โ€” and Tagovailoa has yet to win a playoff game since joining the NFL.

It should be interesting to find out if Tagovailoa or Love will sign a contract extension in the near future. They are debatably two of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL today.
