In light of the news that former University of Illinois guard Terrence Shannon Jr. has been found not guilty on charges of rape and aggravated sexual battery, Miami Dolphins safety Jevon Holland offered a strong reaction on X.
An unidentified woman alleged that Shannon — who was one of the better scorers in the nation during the 2023-24 college basketball season — sexually assaulted her when the latter visited the state of Kansas for a football game back in the month of September.
The woman claimed that early on Sept. 9 — the day after the football game — Shannon put his hand under her skirt and touched her in an inappropriate manner.
Despite the incident supposedly happening back in early September, Shannon wasn’t charged until several months later on Dec. 5.
Shannon went on to testify in court on Thursday that he never even touched the woman, and two defense witnesses in Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar Jr. — both of whom played for the University of Kansas during the 2023-24 season — claimed that they did not witness Shannon acting inappropriately during the night in question.
Brad Underwood — the head coach of Illinois — recently released a statement expressing that he’s glad that the youngster can “move forward with his life.”
“Under six months of intense scrutiny, Terrence has shown tremendous composure, maturity, and focus,” Underwood said. “He can now put this behind him and move forward with his life. I, along with everyone in our Illinois Basketball program, will continue to offer Terrence our full support as he looks to fulfill his NBA dreams.”
Across 32 appearances with Illinois during the 2023-24 campaign — his fifth and final season of college basketball — he averaged 23.0 points per contest on 47.5 percent shooting from the field and 36.2 percent from 3-point range while also averaging 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
He dropped a season-high 40 points while shooting 11-of-22 from the floor, 5-of-9 from deep and 13-of-16 from the charity stripe in Illinois’ win over the University of Nebraska back on March 16.
Last season, Shannon helped lead Illinois to the Elite Eight, where they fell to the University of Connecticut.
Even though Shannon was found not guilty of the allegations put forth against him, the controversy he has been in in recent months could potentially impact his draft stock in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft.
