The Miami Dolphins continue to look for ways to improve heading toward the 2024 NFL season, and that reportedly includes the addition of a “trusted analyst” from the collegiate ranks to their coaching staff.
“Sources tell FootballScoop that [Rob] Everett has left the offensive staff at Wisconsin and accepted an offensive assistant position with the Miami Dolphins,” wrote Doug Samuels.
“Everett spent the past two seasons as a trusted analyst for Phil Longo on the offensive side of the ball.”
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is considered one of the most innovative offensive minds in the game, but it seems he is always looking for ways for his group to get better. In turn, Everett will get to learn from someone like McDaniel at the highest level of the sport after working his way up through the ranks.
Miami has a star-studded offense led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. This offseason, they signed tight end Jonnu Smith to hopefully increase the production from that position and have been linked to veteran free agent receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Michael Thomas as other possible additions.
Everett was a longtime high school coach whose specialty was on the defensive side of the ball. That could give him a unique insight on how the offensive side works as well.
He also had stints at the Division III level and in the Alliance of American Football before moving on to major college football at the University of North Carolina and University of Wisconsin. Last season, he was a senior offensive analyst under offensive coordinator Longo on head coach Luke Fickell’s staff.
The Wisconsin offense ranked sixth in the Big Ten Conference in yards gained per game this past season. The Badgers had a 7-6 overall record and went 5-4 in conference games competing in the Big Ten West Division.
The Dolphins led the NFL in total offense last season as the only team to average more than 400 yards gained per game. It helped them to a second straight playoff appearance, but they have been eliminated with a loss in their first game each time.
They were 11-6 in the 2023 regular season before losing in the first round of the AFC playoffs to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Perhaps the addition of Everett is another step that can help them win a playoff game for the first time in more than 20 years.
