Report: Miami Dolphins hope Jonnu Smith can ‘elevate’ their offense

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins are hoping that Jonnu Smith — who the team signed to a two-year, $10 million contract on Thursday — will make Miami’s offensive attack more lethal in the 2024 season.

Smith, a tight end, spent the 2023 regular season playing for the Atlanta Falcons organization.

The 28-year-old took to X shortly after news of him joining the Dolphins broke.

In 17 games played and six starts with the Falcons during the 2023 regular season, he totaled 582 receiving yards, 26 first downs receiving and three receiving touchdowns on 50 receptions. Smith also averaged 2.9 receptions per game in Atlanta.

While Smith’s season totals don’t necessarily leap off the page, he was able to put together some fantastic performances in his single season with the Falcons.

In a 31-28 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 5, he finished with 100 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown on five receptions. Plus, his longest reception in the game was for 60 yards, which was also his longest of the season.

Another notable performance Smith had came against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 1, when he ended up with 95 receiving yards in a game the Falcons lost by a score of 23-7.

Prior to his short stint with the Falcons, Smith had stops with the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans — who drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft — earlier in his NFL career. More specifically, he spent four seasons with the Titans and two with the Patriots.

Smith’s new team in the Dolphins were one of the top teams on the offensive side of the ball in the 2023 regular season. At 29.2 points per game, Miami had the second-highest scoring average of any team in the NFL. Only the Dallas Cowboys finished ahead of them at 29.9 points per game.

Miami’s offensive excellence in the regular season didn’t carry over into the team’s playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 13, considering Miami mustered just seven points and 264 total yards of offense while allowing the Chiefs to score 26 points.
