Former NFL scout offers advice to Miami Dolphins ahead of 2024 draft

The Miami Dolphins are currently set to have six picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, including one first-round selection, and former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah thinks the team should take a certain approach when the event comes around in April.

“You’re right smack dab in the middle of your window,” Jeremiah said of the Dolphins. “So, to me, you’re looking upside: guys that are ready right now. I always think about what [Baltimore Ravens general manager] Ozzie Newsome used to always say, ‘Let’s just hit doubles in the first round. Let’s not strike out.’

“If I’m the Miami Dolphins, I want someone who can come in and help me, who I feel like is a rock solid player ready to roll right now. That would be the area I’ll be leaning towards. If I had the choice between Player A and Player B, I might be a little bit more conscious of the floor, just personally, where they are. A lot of times, those high-floor picks end up being really really good players.”

It’s going to be an important offseason for the Dolphins, who could use a shot in the arm after a disappointing end to their 2023 campaign. For a second straight season, the squad reached the playoffs but fizzled out in the first round.

While the Dolphins are among the most talented teams in the NFL, they have their fair share of weaknesses, and some skeptics don’t have a lot of faith in them for the 2024 season. They’ll look to prove the doubters wrong in the upcoming campaign, and a strong offseason would be a good place to start.

Multiple draft prospects have been linked to Miami already. In last year’s draft, the Dolphins weren’t on the clock until the second round. When their time finally came around, they picked cornerback Cam Smith with the No. 51 overall selection.

Jeremiah seems to think the Dolphins should take a somewhat cautious approach in this year’s draft — at least in the first round — instead of swinging for the fences. There’s certainly more than one way to have a successful draft, but Jeremiah’s advice is worth noting given his past experience as a scout.

The Dolphins are still trying to earn their first playoff win since the 2000 season. Many players who will be available in the upcoming draft weren’t alive the last time Miami enjoyed a postseason victory. That’s a trend the organization is undoubtedly anxious to kill.

The draft will begin on April 25. The Dolphins will have some key decisions to make by then, and time will tell if they take Jeremiah’s advice.
