Report: Miami Dolphins beat out teams for OLBs coach with ‘defensive coordinator potential’

The Miami Dolphins reportedly are hiring Ryan Crow to coach their outside linebackers.

Crow is apparently rated highly in NFL circles. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the new Dolphins coach is viewed as a coach with “defensive coordinator potential.”

The former Tennessee Titans coach had interest from the Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks.

The Dolphins reportedly are also keeping former outside linebackers coach Ryan Slowik on the staff. He will be in a new position.

Slowik joined the Dolphins as a senior defensive assistant back in 2022. He was then promoted to outside linebackers coach in 2023.

The Dolphins recently hired Anthony Weaver to be their new defensive coordinator, and the team is wasting no time filling out his staff. The Dolphins parted ways with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio following the team’s exit in the playoffs in the 2023 season.

Fangio held the position on Mike McDaniel’s staff for just one season. He is now the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Weaver, who played in the NFL from the 2002 season through the 2008 season, spent the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He was the team’s assistant head coach/defensive line coach in the 2023 season.

Crow, who had held the outside linebackers coach position with the Titans since the 2021 season, was let go by the team following its failure to make the playoffs in the 2023 campaign. Tennessee fired head coach Mike Vrabel, and Crow was one of the casualties from the staff as well.

Tennessee will likely have several new coaches on the staff under new head coach Brian Callahan.

The Dolphins and Weaver are hoping that Crow can help improve the team’s defense so it can make a deep playoff run in the 2024 season.

Miami has made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons under McDaniel, but it has failed to win a playoff game. This season, Miami was extremely banged up heading into the playoffs and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 26-7 in the first round.

Hopefully, the new defensive staff for Miami will be able to put the team in a better position to succeed next season.
