Report: Miami Dolphins bolster defense by signing familiar face

After working out veteran Melvin Ingram on Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins are reportedly signing the 34-year-old to a contract.

Ingram spent the 2022 season with the Dolphins, appearing in all 17 games for the squad during the regular season while also seeing action in Miami’s lone playoff game.

The veteran only made three starts for the Dolphins during the regular season, but he was still able to accumulate six sacks, seven tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits and 22 combined tackles.

Ingram hasn’t played in the 2023 season, but he now gets a chance to join a Super Bowl contender as he looks to earn his first ring in the NFL. A championship would be a wonderful addition to his resume, especially since he has three Pro Bowl nods to his name from his time with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The addition of Ingram is a solid development for the Dolphins as they look to wash away the taste of their excruciating loss to the Tennessee Titans. Miami is 9-4 following the defeat and still has a nice lead in the AFC East, but the team has a tough stretch coming up, and there’s still a lot on the line from a seeding standpoint.

Ingram will join the Dolphins in time to help them navigate what remains of their schedule. The squad does have a winnable game coming up against the New York Jets, but after that, matchups against the Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills remain.

It will be interesting to see how sharp Ingram is once he gets his first taste of game action. Jan. 15 was the last time he played an NFL game — the date the Dolphins were eliminated by the Bills in last season’s playoffs.

But he evidently did enough in his workout with the Dolphins on Tuesday to prove that he can still contribute, so it seems like he’s a player to keep an eye on as the remainder of the season unfolds.

The Dolphins aren’t panicking despite their recent loss, and with Ingram now in the mix, it’s a good time for the squad to push the reset button.
